Setting Up the Network

From unboxing to a verified speed test in six ordered steps, roughly 30–45 minutes in total.

Step 1 (2 min): connect the ISP handoff to the router's WAN port and power on. Confirm the WAN LED is steady before continuing.

Step 2 (3 min): open the router app or admin page, change the admin password, and set the SSID and Wi-Fi password. Do not leave default credentials in place.

Step 3 (5 min): update the router firmware. This clears known wireless bugs before you tune anything else, and it is the step most often skipped.

Step 4 (5 min): decide on bands. Use separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 GHz if legacy devices are present, or one name with band steering if all clients are modern. Enable 6 GHz under its own SSID on Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 hardware.

Step 5 (5 min): set channel width — 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz in dense areas, 80 MHz on 5 GHz as the default, 160 MHz only when the spectrum is clean, and 320 MHz only on Wi-Fi 7 with 6 GHz clients.

Step 6 (10 min): run a speed test 1 m from the router, then in the farthest room. If the far test is below 30% of the near test, revisit placement before changing any other setting.

  • Wrong WAN port is the most common step-2 failure.
  • Skipped firmware update leaves known wireless bugs active.
  • One SSID without band steering makes phones stick to 2.4 GHz.
  • 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz in a dense area causes constant retries.
  • Testing in the router's room measures peak rate, not coverage.
